VB-Cable + HeSuVi: Complete Setup Guide

When your sound card can’t do 7.1, VB-Cable is the free workaround. Step-by-step routing that actually works.

When You Need VB-Cable

Most onboard audio (Realtek, etc.) exposes only stereo to Windows — no 7.1 option to configure. VB-Cable (free/donationware from VB-Audio) creates a virtual audio device that can be set to 7.1, giving HeSuVi the multi-channel input it needs. You need it if: your DAC/headset shows no 7.1 configure option, or you use Bluetooth headphones (stereo-only endpoint).

The Signal Chain

Understand this and setup becomes obvious:

Game/App → CABLE Input (set to 7.1) → Equalizer APO + HeSuVi (convolution) → CABLE Output → your headphones (stereo binaural)

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Install VB-Cable and reboot if prompted.
  2. Open Windows Sound settings: set CABLE Input as the default playback device.
  3. Right-click CABLE Input → Configure Speakers → 7.1 Surround. Set Advanced → 48000 Hz.
  4. Open the Equalizer APO Configurator, tick CABLE Input (the virtual device), use Install as LFX/GFX, reboot.
  5. Open HeSuVi, pick an HRIR profile, run the 7.1 test — you should hear it through the chain.
  6. Route to your real headphones: Recording tab → CABLE Output → Properties → Listen → tick ‘Listen to this device’ → select your headphones.
  7. Verify with our test guide.

Common VB-Cable Mistakes

  • Wrong device in APO Configurator: the APO must attach to CABLE Input, not your headphones.
  • Sample rate mismatch: keep everything at 48 kHz.
  • Skipped reboot after the Configurator step — the APO only loads at startup.
  • Exclusive mode conflicts: on your physical device, tick both Exclusive Mode boxes so games can still take exclusive control where needed.

Latency Note

VB-Cable adds a small buffer of latency — fine for movies and most gaming, but competitive players on wired headphones should prefer a direct 7.1-capable device when possible.

The Bottom Line

VB-Cable is the standard free fix for stereo-only sound cards and Bluetooth headphones: virtual 7.1 device → APO+HeSuVi on the cable → listen-to your real headphones. Follow the chain above and verify with the 7.1 test.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need VB-Cable for HeSuVi?

Only if your sound device lacks a 7.1 configure option (most onboard audio, all Bluetooth). If 7.1 is available natively, skip it.

Is VB-Cable free?

Yes — donationware. One virtual cable is free; more cables need the paid version.

Why is there no sound with VB-Cable?

Usually the APO is attached to the wrong device (must be CABLE Input) or the Listen-to routing on CABLE Output is missing.
